Castro de Centroña, Perbes or Castrelo
Known as the castro de Centroña, castro de Perbes or castro de Castrelo, it is located between the parishes of Centroña (Pontedeume) and Perbes (Miño), at an altitude of 194 m., and covers an area of 4.1 ha., with UTM coordinates 565293-4805764. In the absence of any major archaeological work, it is usually dated to the Second Iron Age, around 400 BC.
This area already had a strong commercial development in Punic and Roman times, as reflected in the Roman settlements of Centroña and Sopazos (Pontedeume), Noville and Caldoval (Mugardos), the Roman coin hoard of Algara in Bermaño-Perbes, and the remains found in Loios (Miño).
Torques de Centroña
Castro de Centroña is related to the pre-Christian sanctuary of Monte Breamo, on which today we have a Romanesque chapel. It is believed that it may have functioned as the capital of the area, as its relationship with this pagan temple and with other surrounding hill forts of smaller size and probably subsidiary - Boebre, Centroña, Nogueirosa and Castro - seems to show.
An indication of this sovereignty is the gold half-torque known as Torques de Centroña, which appeared in the vicinity of the settlement in 1992. This torques reflects the rich goldsmith workmanship of this period, of which our region can boast. It is currently on display in the Provincial Museum of Lugo.
These discoveries evidence the importance of the castro of Centroña-Perbes, leading it to be identified with the city of Ardóbriga cited by the Roman geographer Pomponio Mela.
The elliptical estructure of this castro
The most clearly preserved structures are the elliptical-shaped main enclosure with its earthen walls. It is surrounded by an antecastro on the northwest side and another on the east. It is surrounded in its entirety by a system of terraces. The most clearly preserved structures are the elliptical-shaped main enclosure with its earthen walls. In the past, it was possible to complete the circumvallation of the croa (highest part and core of the castro, crop), but today the castro is difficult to visit due to the advance of the vegetation and its thicket, which makes it difficult to observe.
Ardóbriga
In 2008, the citizens' initiative to create the Ardóbriga Cultural Association to safeguard the archaeological heritage arose, taking the name of the city attributed by the researcher Millán González - Pardo to the Castro de Centroña and choosing as a symbol of the half-torque found there.
Panoramic view of the estuary
The visual domain from the location of this castro allows us to contemplate a wide panoramic view from the Torre de Hercules (A Coruña) to the Islas Sisargas (Malpica). We will be able to enjoy it as long as the weather is favorable and the lush vegetation allows us to do so
A beautiful place to enjoy spectacular views over the estuary of Ares and Betanzos in an environment steeped in history. With a little imagination, we can catch a glimpse of the Phoenician and Roman ships entering with their sails unfurled towards the center of the Gulf of Ares.
